Robert L. Smith, MD

Born in Buffalo, New York, Robert L. Smith, MD graduated from Rochester’s East High School in 1987.  He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Sports Science with a minor in Biology at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1991.  While at Wake Forest he held the position as Head Student Manager for the Men’s Basketball Team from his Freshman through Senior year.  After college, his first career was that of a PGA Golf Professional at Stafford Country Club in the WNYPGA Section, from 1991-1993, before deciding to pursue a career in medicine.

He  returned to graduate school in 1993 and completed his Master’s Degree in Clinical Chemistry at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1996.  Dr. Smith earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2000 and remained in Syracuse for residency while attending the St. Joseph’s Hospital Family Medicine Residency from 2000-2003.  His first position was at Shortsville Family Practice during a short stay before founding Finger Lakes Family Care in February of 2006.  Starting his practice from scratch as a solo provider in a 1,000 square foot office, Dr. Smith has steadily grown his practice into a cutting edge practice in Canandaigua, NY.  Dr. Smith has now been an active member of the medical staff at F.F. Thompson Hospital since 2003 and serves on a number of medical staff committees as well as serving as Vice President of the hospital’s medical staff from 2007 through 2009.  Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the New York State Academy of Family Physicians, and the Canandaigua Medical Society.

Dr. Smith’s other professional interests include practice redesign and consulting with other practices to move towards a completely paperless office, as well as being a leader within the field of e-health.  Dr. Smith serves as a consultant for UpDox, LLC, a revolutionary online collaboration and communication network for patients and physicians alike, as well as being named the Chief Medical Officer for Apractis Solutions, LLC, and NowDox.

Aside from his professional endeavors, his personal interests include spending time with his wife and daughter, competing in amateur golf tournaments with a 0.4 USGA index, loyally supporting Wake Forest Basketball, and traveling.
